Greg Zibell fait partie de ces artistes qui ont choisi de créer en partie parce que conscients de l'urgence à agir face au désordre écologique. Pollution de l'air et des océans, réchauffement climatique, raréfaction des ressources, disparition d'espèces animales, artificialisation des terres, stress hydrique...les raisons de s'inquiéter sont nombreuses.

 

Pourtant, loin de céder à la facilité de baisser les bras, il est donc apparu clairement à Greg Zibell que s'engager devenait non seulement nécessaire mais surtout indispensable. Il relevait de son éthique personnelle d'être dans l'action, de s'investir pour changer les mentalités, pour recréer une alliance entre les humains et la Terre. Il veut s'engager pour remettre l'Homme non plus au centre du système planétaire mais au milieu, pour lui redonner cette humilité qu'il a depuis trop longtemps perdu, pour qu'il reprenne conscience qu'il ne peut faire sans cette Terre qu'il a et qu'il continue à mépriser, avilir, souiller.

 

En quelques décennies, nous sommes rentrés dans une nouvelle ère géologique dans laquelle les effets de l'activité humaine sont si néfastes à notre planète (tant à l'atmosphère qu'à la croûte terrestre) que l'on parle d'Anthropocène, l'ère géologique des modifications engendrées par l'homme.

 

Mais il ne suffit pas de se contenter de critiquer, il faut suivre, pour Greg Zibell selon les termes de Paul Ardenne : « la seule écosophie qui vaille, celle qui jumelle devenir environnemental et devenir sociétal, celle qui fédère vie quotidienne et gestion de la nature dans un même ensemble dépendant et responsable ».

 

Greg Zibell s'inscrit pleinement dans cette démarche volontariste, engagée et optimiste. Sa vie personnelle accompagne sa production artistique et inversement.

Le travail photographique de Greg Zibell est protéiforme. Il s'agit d'une création qui ne se laisse pas enfermer dans une case. Greg Zibell explore constamment de nouveaux chemins, de nouveaux thèmes. Il est très attaché aux livres en tant qu'objet, et il aime en créer. Dans la série, il trouve le moyen de montrer la complexité du monde. Il a une vision véritablement systémique du monde dont il veut montrer les connexions, les imbrications constantes.

 

Il cherche à donner le plus de lui-même dans son travail avec intégrité, sincérité, humilité et respect. Le respect est une valeur fondamentale pour lui, respect des autres et de leurs différences, respect de la Nature et de ses différentes composantes, respect de la mémoire, respect de tout ce qui nous lie aux autres humains et biosphère.

 

Il considère la photographie comme un pont. Un pont entre le passé et l'avenir, un pont entre les hommes par delà les frontières et les dissonances, un pont pour rapprocher les individus autour de leur humanité et destin communs. Il cherche par son travail à convaincre les individus que nous sommes tous membres de la même communauté humaine et plus largement encore de la même communauté de vivants sur Terre. Ainsi quand une espèce disparaît c'est toute la famille des vivants qui est endeuillée.

 

Tout son travail photographique cherche à amener les autres dans sa recherche de l'empathie et de la bienveillance à l'égard du monde qui nous entoure.

Greg Zibell is one of those artists who have chosen to create in part because they are aware of the urgency to act in the face of ecological disorder. Air and ocean pollution, global warming, scarcity of resources, disappearance of animal species, artificialization of land, water stress ... there are many reasons for concern.

 

However, far from giving in to the ease of giving up, it became clear to Greg Zibell that getting involved was not only necessary but above all essential. It was his personal ethic to be in action, to invest in changing mentalities, to recreate an alliance between humans and the Earth. He wants to commit to putting Man no longer at the center of the planetary system but in the middle, to give him back that humility that he has lost for too long, so that he regains consciousness that he cannot do without this Earth. which he has and which he continues to despise, debase, defile.

 

In a few decades, we have entered a new geological era in which the effects of human activity are so harmful to our planet (both the atmosphere and the earth's crust) that we speak of the Anthropocene, the geological era of man-made changes.

 

But it is not enough to be satisfied with criticizing, it is necessary to follow, for Greg Zibell in the words of Paul Ardenne: "the only ecosophy that is worthwhile, that which combines becoming environmental and becoming societal, that which unites daily life and management of the nature in the same dependent and responsible whole ”.

 

Greg Zibell is fully in line with this proactive, committed and optimistic approach. His personal life accompanies his artistic production and vice versa. Greg Zibell's photographic work is protean. This is a creation that cannot be locked in a box. Greg Zibell is constantly exploring new paths, new themes. He is very attached to books as an object, and he likes to create them. In the series, he finds a way to show the complexity of the world. He has a truly systemic vision of the world of which he wants to show the connections, the constant interweaving.

 

He seeks to give the most of himself in his work with integrity, sincerity, humility and respect. Respect is a fundamental value for him, respect for others and their differences, respect for Nature and its different components, respect for memory, respect for everything that binds us to other humans and the biosphere.

 

He sees photography as a bridge. A bridge between the past and the future, a bridge between people across borders and dissonances, a bridge to bring individuals together around their common humanity and destiny. He seeks through his work to convince individuals that we are all members of the same human community and more broadly of the same community of living beings on Earth. So when a species disappears, the whole family of the living is in mourning.

 

All of his photographic work seeks to bring others in his search for empathy and benevolence towards the world around us.
